Rocks Hotel — KNX system upgrade in the mock-up room
In the hotel's mock-up room the ageing room automation was replaced with KNX, bringing lighting, climate and curtain control onto one standard.

The Challenge
Before rolling the system out to every room, the hotel wanted to see it working in a single room first. The existing installation was outdated: communication between devices was limited, and maintaining or extending it had become difficult over time. The requirement was clear — lighting, air conditioning and curtain control had to run reliably on one standard within the same room.
The room was fully finished and in service. The work therefore had to proceed without touching the existing wood panelling or furniture, reusing the panel recess, cable routes and back boxes as they were.
The Watt Works Solution
We removed the old control modules from the room's panel and installed a KNX power supply and actuators in their place, keeping the existing breaker group and cabling arrangement. Lighting circuits, air conditioning control and curtain motors were brought onto the same KNX line, with addressing and commissioning carried out in the room itself.
The user interface consists of the card holder at the entrance and the touch KNX panels inside the room; lighting scenes, temperature setting, curtains and the “do not disturb / make up room” signal are all operated from these points. Because KNX devices from different manufacturers work together in one system, the installation stays open to adding devices later and to repeating the same setup in other rooms.
Engineering Highlights
- A KNX backbone replacing the legacy room system
- Lighting, air conditioning and curtains on one system
- Card holder at the entrance, touch KNX panels in the room
- Do-not-disturb and make-up-room signalling
- A mock-up installation that can be rolled out to other rooms
